History of the 2002 Turbo
The first in my Top 30 (in no particular order) coolest, most iconic, or just my favorite cars from Forza Horizon 4 series of articles and videos. The 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo is one of my favorite old school cars, and one of my favorite all-time BMW’s. As the owner of a 135i, I have considered doing a widebody conversion and painting it like this in homage. BMW created the 1 class as the spiritual successor to the 2002.
BMW took a 2002 tii and threw in the M31 version of the M10 Engine (1990cc inline 4) which added Kugelfischer fuel injection and Kuhnle, Kopp and Kausch turbocharger making it BMW’s first turbo car. This brought the horsepower up to 170bhp from 130bhp and the standing 0-60MPH time down from 9.3 seconds to 7.0 seconds with a top speed of 115MPH. One of the biggest complaints about this setup was turbo lag made the engine near useless under 4,000RPM. Built from 1973 until 1975 there were only 1,672 of these built, less than any other 02 series BMW (other than special versions)
2002 Turbo In-Game Performance
In Forza Horizon 4, the 2002 Turbo is fairly accurate in its specs, which is pretty standard for Forza games. The top speed is quite a bit higher in-game though, maybe because it’s just an arcade-type game and not a simulator. It’s a pretty good car in either spec though.
Fully Stock the 2002 Turbo is a D class car with a PI of 500. It weighs 2381 lbs and has 168HP, although the manufacturer specs put it at 1,103KG (2,432lbs) and 170HP. In stock form, it has a 0.065 HP/LB power to weight ratio, with a top speed of 145MPH it does a 1/2 Mile drag in 23 seconds at 106MPH, and ran the Lake District Sprint in 3:09 coming in 1st place.
Fully Modded Performance
Fully Modified, I went with the 4.0L V8 because even though there were other options like the 1.6L Turbo race engine and the inline 6, this engine gave the best power to weight ratio of 0.367 HP/LB. It ended up an S2 class with a PI of 918, 867 Horsepower, and 2,366LBS. With these numbers, it ran the 1/2 Mile drag at 182MPH in 13.6 Seconds and had a top speed of 218MPH. It ran the same Lake District Sprint in 2:10 and also placed 1st.
